Throughout time Brides and Grooms have come to observe traditions and customs, but
did you ever wonder why they did so?

Here are some fun facts you may enjoy.

Let’s start before the wedding. The “Bridal Shower” began in an attempt to strengthen
relationships between the bride and her friends. To prepare the bride for her wedding,
the bride’s friends would gather to give her moral support and help her prepare for the
marriage. The idea of giving gifts is relatively new- originating around the 1890’s. It took
on a life of it’s own as we know it to be today!

The Groom chose his Best Man in a practical way. In early days, many marriages were
accomplished by “capturing” the bride. The Groom had to fight off the other “suitors”
and would often choose the strongest warrior to help in his quest and also to prevent the
woman’s family from finding the couple.

Diamonds are a Bride’s best friend to paraphrase an old expression, but did you know
that these lovely baubles were given by medieval Italians in the belief that the diamond
was created in the Flames of Love. Ah, yes, that explains that sparkle!

Bridal bouquets in early Roman times took the form of floral garlands used to decorate
the bride and groom, giving hope for new life and fertility. The Romans and Greeks also
took up the custom of strewing petals before the Bride and Groom to symbolize the very
essence of love! Leave it to those lusty Mediterraneans.
